No doubt some readers will presume this article is about a popular TV chef, but they’d be wrong! The above title refers to none other than a plant. Its seeds, when cold-pressed, produce one of the most potent natural oils known to man.

Nigella Sativa, better known as black caraway, black cumin, or the blessed seed, is used in the production of this veritable elixir. Its aromatic flavour has for thousands of years featured in Eastern cuisine. However, it is also renowned as an antidote to many common human ailments, even getting a mention in the Quran. The Prophet Muhammad said of it “Use this black seed. For indeed it contains a cure for every disease except As-Sam (death).”

So, what exactly are the benefits of black seed oil? Well, here is a list of just ten ways in which regular use of this product could improve your health and overall wellbeing:

1 Allergies. Due to its anti-inflammatory qualities, this oil is known to help alleviate allergic reactions to things such as pets, dust, high pollen count, sensitivity to certain foods, pollution etc.

2 Cholesterol. In various studies, regular use of the oil has been found to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. This is, in the main, down to the “good” fats present within the oil itself.

3 Respiratory conditions. Black seed oil can be beneficial for anyone who suffers from asthma, bronchitis, and restricted breathing. The phytochemicals present in the oil act in a similar way to modern allopathic antiallergic medication.

4 High blood pressure. Although it is difficult to establish just how this oil actually reduces dangerously high blood pressure, it is suspected that the presence of omega-3 essential fatty acids, flavonoid polyphenols and soluble fibre could be instrumental in the process.

5 Immune system. Research has shown that this oil has antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-oxidant properties, which are all conducive to maintaining a stronger, more robust immune system.

6 Digestion. The discomfort or pain associated with conditions such as dyspepsia, diarrhoea, flatulence, colic, constipation, dysentery and haemorrhoids can be alleviated by regular use of this oil.

7 Skin, hair and nails. As this oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, and is also naturally antifungal, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, it means that this is an ideal product to help to clear various skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis etc. It also well known to be beneficial for hair health, and in certain cases has even been known to assist in hair regrowth on bald and thinning areas of the scalp.

8 Influenza/colds. Following on from number 5, if taken regularly, this oil can help boost your immunity to ailments such as coughs, colds and flu. Although not a cure, it can assist in staving off illness.

9 Type 2 Diabetes. Research suggests that black seed oil can increase glucose-induced secretion of insulin, reduce intestinal glucose absorption and an overall improvement in daily glucose levels.

10 Rheumatoid arthritis. The oil’s anti-inflammatory properties are conducive to an overall reduction in swelling around affected joints, and consequently the pain associated with this debilitating condition.

As you can see, this product appears to be a veritable Godsend when it comes to things medical. And what’s even more encouraging is that, due to it being a natural product, there are apparently no side effects from taking it. However, there is one major caveat: It is strongly recommended that the oil should be avoided during pregnancy. Other than that, it appears to be win, win all the way.

As there are so many black seed oil manufacturers out there in the marketplace, here are jus a few tips to ensure you’re getting the best product available. Before you make a purchase, ensure that the oil is from Nigella Sativa seeds, that they are organic or at least cold-pressed, and that the oil comes in a glass bottle. Avoid any contained in plastic, as toxins can leech out, contaminating the oil and thus defeating the object.

One company I have used in the past is "The Blessed Seed", and, although the products don’t claim to be organic, they are of a very high quality, in particular the strong version. They’re not cheap, but the quality speaks for itself.

In conclusion, if your interest in this oil has been piqued, I strongly advise you do your own research, and hope you find this as beneficial to your overall health as I have.
